I am having a problem with Photoshop 6.0 on Win XP/Dell Inspiron 8100 laptop 512 of RAM.

Sometimes, during a save in Photoshop, the file I am attempting to save becomes corrupt and Photoshop crashes. After this point the file cannot be opened, and any program crashes (including Windows Explorer) that attempts to browse the contents of the folder that contains the corrupt image file. The only way to save the contents of the folder is to go to another machine, and remotely delete the corrupt file. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

We don’t know of any such problems.

Are you really using 6.0, or 6.0.1?

Well then, it’s almost assuredly something on your system — a bad utility program, a bad OS or Photoshop install, or a bad disk system.

Are you saving to a local disk, or a file server volume (don’t do that!) ?

Local disk. It seems to happen when the file viewer attempts to represent a thumbnail. Any known problems with Photoshop 6 and XP Explorer clashing when attempting to render a thumbnail of an image file?

no. it’s likely somethin specific to your system. have you tried to reset the prefrences per the faq? have you run scandisk thourough? have you defragged the drive?

I don’t know if this will help but I’ve seen a similar problem with PS Elements and Win XP on my work machine which is fairly low spec 256 Mb of RAM (not intended for PS use). Trying to browse a few folder levels down in Explorer would crash Explorer if there were image files in the folders. After a half day troubleshooting and reinstalling XP, it turned out to be related to file associations. Cured by resetting associations for JPEGs and maybe TIFFS to the XP defaults rather than associating with PS Elements. Worth a try perhaps?
