Photoshop-CS "freeze"

Every once in awhile when I’m using CS the cursor or tool I am using turns into a small quarter inch long line with an arrow on each end (pointing in opposite directions). Once this happens there is nothing I can do but restart. Sometimes I can just restart PS. Other times I must restart the machine.

Anyone else have this problem? Does anyone know what I am doing wrong or is this a bug?

Thanks in advance.

Lee,

Could be a video driver issue.

As a diagnostic, try turning down hardwa\re accelleration to zero. – If that helps, you definitely have a vid.driver problem

Thanks Len. I’m not real computer literate. Where do I find that on my computer? buddy?

On XP it’s under display properties>advanced>troubleshoot.

…. don’t mess with your video hardware acceleration setting. If it has to be adjusted downward – you need a better card.
Just for the record, what is your computer hardware configuration – which processor and how fast it is, how much memory and what video card are you using. Also, what other applications are running at the same time. And, assuming you are not MAC, your operating system needs to be Windows-XP – nothing older – such as: Windows-98.

wtf are you talking about? it’s a diagnostic tool to tell if the driver is bad. if you turn it down and the problem goes away, you have a buggy driver.

I doubt this is the case though. my guess is still hardware error.

And, assuming you are not MAC,

this it the windows forum. so i’m assuming windows too.

your operating system needs to be Windows-XP – nothing older – such as: Windows-98.

lee specified he was using PS CS. Will not run under win 98. xp OR win 2k is required.

so he MUST be running XP or 2k, as those OSes are "process isolated" an application can not lock up or reboot the system. The only things that would force a reboot (without a blue screen error, which is usually driver related) are hardware error (ie ram, cpu, mobo, etc), buggy bios or a very bad (i mean crap, the vendor would know immediately and release a patch or remove the driver) low level device driver.

len’s advice was a valid test for a vid driver (I just don’t think that’s going to be the problem <g>).

That is completely wrong. You need a new driver. Big difference.

And, assuming you are not MAC,

That’s Mac, no caps needed. And this is a Windows forum.

Your operating system needs to be Windows-XP – nothing older – such as: Windows-98.

Also incorrect. Win 2K SP 3 works just fine.

I’m running Win XP with an Athlon 1800+ processor and 768 MB DDR Ram. The video card is an ATI 8500 w/64 MB DDR. Everything on my system works fine. CS works fine. I hear folks complaining about how slow it loads. Mine loads in a heartbeat. The ONLY problem I’m having is the one mentioned above and it’s sporadic. Does any of that info help?

temporarily rename the mmxcore plug in to see if that "solves" it. if it does, it’s bad hardware. then it’s up to you to decide if it’s sporadic enough not to worry about or if it’s something you need to address in your system.

Dave,

Thanks buddy. I’ll try that. Only problem is that I’m not real computer literate and have no idea what the mmxcore plug is or where I can find it. And what do I do after I temporarily rename it? Work with PS for a few days to see if the "double arrow" happens again or will I know something right away?

Thanks again

should be in something like:

C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop CS\Plug-Ins\Extensions

close photoshop, open explorer, go to that folder, right click the file, select Rename and rename it mmxcore.8bx.save.

if the problem goes away your problem is hardware related. if not, rename it back to mmxcore.8bx and continue troubleshooting.

I’d just like to mention that I have this problem too. Once and a while my cursor will change into the horizontal drag icon and new tools will not work. This happens randomly; it can be hours hours after I load PS or it can be instant.

When this happens I can click on other tools, but clicking on my image will not change it at all. All of the menus above the image work, though, so saving and loading and everything else is ok.

I have an AMD Athlon 1.2GHz with 512mb DDR 2700 and a Radeon 9800 Pro 256mb. I haven’t tried the MMXcore thing yet, but I doubt that my hardware is bad. At least I hope it isn’t my hardware.

Yeah. Glad to see other people are having the same problem as me. Can’t seem to find a solution. I wouldn’t be so quick to rule out a driver or hardware error, but I expect it will turn out ot be something more cryptic. Have just sent an e-mail to Adobe to see if they’ve come across the error before. It puts a serious slow-down on my work, and that’s something I can scarce afford. If anyone does know what this problem is, please reply.

I looked on the Adobe site.. and found a fix .. I think I had the same problem.
Turn on hidden files.. go to

C:\Documents and Settings\USER\Application
Data\Adobe\Photoshop\8.0\Adobe Photoshop CS Settings\

where USER = your user name

they said to delete.. New Doc Sizes.. that did not work for me.. however.. if you delete everything but WorkSpaces and Action Palaltte.psp it worked fine. You can delete all of it if you want. Photoshop recreates them when it boots. I did not want to lose my work spaces.

Man.. it only took me about 3 hours to figure that out. I tried replacing my drivers and everything. this worked fine on friday.. put a new card in the computer and all of a sudden it did not work. I am not 100% positive that is what caused it.. but it is definetly a possibility. Just reinstalling will not fix this problem.

Good luck.
