I have gone completely brain dead today. I converted a color picture to grayscale and then wish to add a colored layer to the image. The additional layer continues to convert to grayscale as well. I have done this several times before, but for some reason I am drawing a blank today, and you guys are faster than the manual. Thanks tc

You cannot add colour to a grayscale, you need to reconvert your photo to RGB.

In other words, leave the file color mode at RGB, and just have the elements that you want to be greyscale desaturated, or whatever method you wish to use to remove color. Personally I would use adjustment layers. Then you have the options of going back to color or adding color.

Adjustment layer to desaturate, along with a Channel Mixer to add contrast where needed in the grayscale image.
