There is probably a very simple answer to this…

I would like to be able to double click on a Canon Raw File (.crw) and have it opened in PS CS. I go to the Folder Options in XP and go through the procedure for associating a particular file type with the program desired for opening that file. PS is not listed among the "available" programs. I click on "Browse" and navigate to the PS CS.exe within program files/Adobe/etc.

When I choose the PS CS exe, it doesn’t then list it as the program to open the file. It seems every other program that has anything to do with images (Picture It, etc.) is listed as an option but not PS CS.

If I do this similar procedure say with a JPG or TIFF, then PS CS is listed at the top (in the Recommended Programs list).

Am I missing something or is it not possible to associate a Canon Raw format (.CRW) with PS CS so it can be directly opened?

Thanks in advance.

Andrew,

XP:

highlight a crw file and right click it

choose Properties from the menu

choose the Change button at Type of File and pick Adobe Photoshop CS

Click OK

Now Click the Apply button

Thanks for the reply Ian.

When I do exactly what you describe (and I tried this already), Adobe Photoshop CS is not listed when I click the Change button.

I then click Browse and navigate to Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop CS\Photoshop CS.exe and choose the .exe file.

When I click OK, Photoshop CS is NOT listed among the programs that one can then choose to associate with the CRW file type.

It’s maddening because when I simply open PS CS, I can use the File Browser and navigate to any of my crw files and open them without any problem.

What could be going on?

What could be going on?

No idea. The way I described is the way I’ve always done it.

Photoshop CS is NOT listed among the programs that one can then choose to associate with the CRW file type.

But does double clicking on the file launch ps and load the image? Whether or not it’s listed shouldn’t have an effect on your "manual" association. Also, you can check the registry for the file type and set the program it opens with there. That’s essentially what happens when you follow Ian’s advice. If you don’t know what I’m talking about in the registry, then don’t mess with it.

Peace,
Tony

Hello

Right click on file
Select open
select search for application
Select application via browse
select always use this application.

I don’t own a Canon, I just have one .crw, but it opens by double-clicking it into CS.

For anyone interested,

This problem was resolved by deleting the registry key within HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\Photoshop.exe\shell\open\comm and\(Default).

My thanks to Len Hewitt who pointed out the problem in another context within PS7.
