Create a gradient mask, then use Hue/Sat adjustment layer and apply the gradient mask.
I like to create my gradient masks in the channels palette. You would use the gradient tool and define black as opaque white as transparent. White is where your image will show through. You draw the gradient in a new alpha channel, then Load Channel as Selection from the bottom of the channel palette. While that’s selected, go to the layers palette and use a hue/sat adjustment layer and drop the sat all the way down. It will appy that desaturation to your mask.
Peace,
Tony
I’d go along with Tony’s advice, but do it a little differently.
Add a Hue/Sat adjustment layer and reduce Sat to zero. Click on the mask thumbnail, that is to the right of the Hue/Sat thumb in the Layers palette. Select the gradient tool and draw a gradient across your image. If the result isn’t right, fiddle with the gradient tool settings and try again.
Experience shows that there are always at least 3 ways to do anything in PS. Next!
Thanks, it works fine but my gradient mask has vertical transition bands along the image. It’s not a smooth transition from black to white. How do I get a more blended (smoother) transition on my gradient mask?
Snake…what is the color-depth setting of your display?
I figured it out. I went to the gradient editor and reset my gradients. I must have had it on a coarse setting. Thanks

I successfully desaturated the right side of the photo to pure white. How do I remove the border around the photo so the right side of the photo blends into the white background of my website?
How did the border remain on the right side if you dragged a gradient effect across it?…..must be on a different layer…..if so delete the layer if you want to get rid of the border. Or do the same gradient effect over the border layer. Or go back in history, merge the layers then do the same gradient effect.
Colin,
Click on the mask thumbnail, that is to the right of the Hue/Sat thumb in the Layers palette. Select the gradient tool and draw a gradient across your image.
Quicker. Thanks!
Or even better–set up your hue/sat as a layer adjustment. Make sure you have your 2nd thumbnail in the hue/sat layer clicked (you will see a frame around the thumbnail) fill this with black (Edit>Fill>Black) then paint in with white hue/sat layer adjustment using brushes and different opacity modes. More control over just where you want hue/sat/
