Check the settings of the 1280 spooler; find out where it’s spooling to. Scandisk your drive. Change spool locations and see if that helps. Check to see if you’re sending RAW or EMF data to the printer (in the printer properties). Are you printing across a network? Is the printer connected via serial or USB?
I have a very similar problem. I am running Photoshop CS on a Dell Dimension 4500 with Windows XP Pro and an Epson 2200 printer. There is no network and the printer is connected via USB. I also can print only one picture and then, when I try to print a second picture, Photoshop CS stops responding. Other programs continue to work on the computer, but the only way to print a second picture is to re-boot (aren’t computers wonderful work savers?). How does one check a spool setting?
How does one check a spool setting?
Check the printer Properties, either in Explorer or using the Properites button before printing.
I’ve seen USB issues before, although they are rare, is it possible to connect a serial cable and test?
Peace,
Tony
Dear Charles
I’m the guy who posted this question, and I solved my problem. I have another printer and somehow this second printer was getting involved in the loop. Computer folks can probably explain this, but I found that if I turn the second printer off when I’m using photoshop and the Epson 1280, everything is fine. Somebody will eventually tell me how to fix this in a more professional way, but I send this to you for what it is worth.
in a more professional way

Hmmm … Since I have a HP Photosmart also connected by USB to my computer, that may be a good suggestion, Lee.
I had changed the Epson printer to spooling (I guess, the dialogue box called it something else) to a slave drive, but that had produced no effect.
The only other thing that I noticed was whenever I had this problem, my shutdown sequence also stalled by something called
STM3S BackMon
which ceased responding also.
I did not attempt the serial cable test as it is such a giant pain to access the back of my tower.
Back to the drawing board. I turned off my HP printer using the switch on the front of the printer. I exited the system and rebooted with the HP printer off. I then printed a picture using Photoshop CS. When I went to print another picture, I again got the "Not responding" message.
All suggestions gratefully accepted.
Was the USB problem USB 1.0, 1.1 or 2.0 ? Was it a hardware (i.e., USB card defective) or a software problem ?
If possible, i would start with unloading all unncesessary printer software, just keeping the bare drivers that you need to print. Uninstall the whole she-bang. Restart your system. When the hardware wizard comes up, load just the driver and go.
most of the docs with the printers tell you to exit the hardware wizard and run setup from the install disk. What I’m saying is "don’t do that".
See if you can print with just the base set of drivers loaded.
