Hello,

I am going to get anew monitor for color correction of photos at a "professional" level. I would like to know which type of monitor to get. Lcd or CRT?

I was told that the LCD have more vivid colors (Not realistic) than a CRT which has more accurate colors.

Any advice would be great.

Are you a professional, if so why did you ask such a stupid question.

(Apologies for asking such a stupid question as the answer is obvious).

In Canada, that’s a valid benefit! These Igloos can get cold! 😉

Here in Hawaii, my three monitors keep me nice and warm… I have plans involving my monitors,a car radiator and a little pump to cut my hot water bill down a bit 😉

I should imagine with 3 monitors in Hawaii you could charge for people to sit in the room as a sauna 😉

OTOH, over here in little old England, the heat comes in really useful in the winter 😉

With all due respect to the other folks answering your question, I’ve just gone through the same process. I ended up purchasing two LG Flatron L1920P LCD screens. I placed one next to my trusty high-end CRT and the difference was significant. The LCD screen, using a digital video card with DVI connector, was much brighter, showed no color bleed, and was very clear and clean (at least equal to the CRT in clarity and crispness). I also plugged one of the Flatrons into an analog port (VGA) and the brightness and clarity are great but the colors do bleed a bit. My next purchase will be a dual DVI video card…

The screens are a bit pricey (about $700 usd each) but I’d take them over the CRT anytime after comparing them side by side.

They do look better, sure, easy on the eyes, nice vibrant colors, but can you calibrate them and how do your prints look?

Actually, I do quite a bit of prepress work. And, as for calibration, they have several different calibration options. My on-screen colors are very good matches for my printed colors, in fact, they match better than did the on-screen colors from my CRT.

The real answer (the LCD/CRT pissing match aside) is "it depends". Namely it depends on the brand and quality level you decide to get.

The status right now seems to be that you can get a color accurate CRT at a lower price than you’d pay for a good LCD. However if you have the money to spend then high end LCD screens have a sharpness/clarity that I have not seen any CRT match.

I personally spent more and got color accurate LCD screens because
A) CRT screens have always bothered my eyes for some reason
and
B) I live in a warm climate with high electric bills so anything that reduces the amount my A/C needs to run is a godsend! <grin>

Yes. If you buy quality makes like Eizo, you will get good results, I agree. Most of the more moderately priced LCD/TFT screens aren’t suitable for colour matching though.
