Hey–another IT question! The college I work for installed CS Suite and pushed image to 18 computers in my classroom, then on friday installed Corel Painter 8 and Wacom Graphire 3’s locally at each machine. Monday students working on animations in Image Ready in class and the computers kept freezing.

Would this install cause Photoshop/Image Ready to lock up when using layers (could not turn eyeballs on/off in layers palette when using the animation palette in IR and then program crashed. On reload (had to use hard boot as task manager would not close out app), Photoshop stops at loading plug-ins? Did twice and then XP claimed major failure, shut down and then Pshop loaded fine.

Unfortunately we are forced to run anti-virus and "deep freeze" on these computers due to campus policy. Also noticed when I was in poking around in system that the computers are only showing 496 of ram instead of 512 (Gateways).

Any ideas? I’ve never had anything like this happen!

Are all the upgrades (PS, Wacom drivers and Painter 8) installed? The Painter upgrade in particular has to be installed on a fresh install of Painter before the application is opened the first time, or it doesn’t work…It corrects quite a few "fritzy gliches," of which your problems could be one.

The anti-virus are probably contributing some problems. Also, where are the PS cache files located? Preferably on a different drive from the application itself…

Lots of little things to configure, multiplied and complicated by the school network. Hopefully you’ve got a decent IT dept. at the school with someone there or on the Faculty that is familiar with all the nit-picky configurations for the apps and the tablets.

Our 3rd head of IT this semester starts tomorrow! Hopefully they didn’t open Painter and I’ll download the patch today and get it installed tomorrow! Thanks! I know all of the adobe configurations–it’s just Painter got added to the mix and I have a feeling that this is what’s messing up the system–Wacoms are fine I downloaded their patches previously!

Thanks for the help!

If they HAVE opened Painter, you will have to totally uninstall Painter, Install Painter, Install the Patch, REBOOT, and then you can open Painter. You will know if the patch is installed by seeing a Custom Palette menu option under "Windows" I believe (my PC with Painter currently has a blown HD, so I can’t verify).

Good luck!

I plan on uninstalling all painter installs (don’t know if it was opened on all machines or not and I’m not taking any chances.) Thanks for all your help! Hopefully this will resolve the problem with Pshop CS. Cs was working fine until IT did this–If we had had painter before the CS install I would have installed it first, since it was the older program then installed the patch, then installed CS but I don’t have that luxury. If push comes to shove (if Pshop doesn’t recover) however I may have to have IT reimage the room.

If we have to reimage is the best way to install;
1.Painter 8/Painter 8.1 patch
2.Wacom Graphire 3
3.Adobe Creative Suite

The odds that an installation of one application (Painter) is preventing another application (Photoshop) from running properly are pretty slim (like zero). The applications do not depend on each other’s code to run. But there is a chance that a Graphire pointing device could be having some problems working properly with Windows, and could give you some problems in Photoshop. Check the driver version for the tablet and see if there is a more recent version available at Wacom’s website.
