I am new at this and was able to mask a figure in my picture and change the unmasked area using a layer mask. Now, I want the masking pattern to disappear, leaving me with the changed unmasked area and the unchanged masked area. I moved the mask to the trashcan and chose apply mask but this did not get rid of the mask markings on the masked area.

I know I am doing something wrong – I just don’t know what.

Thanks

If you do not want the mask, then why are you appling it? It should be discard, unless I have misread your post.

Discarding would remove the mask and return the layer to the unmasked status. Of course it doesn’t effect the value in the blending modes or opacity, or items already deleted from the layer.

Sorry, I didn’t make myself clear. I want the mask effects. The area I protect however still is checkerboarded out after I make the changes. In other words I want the checkerboarding to disappear and keep the changes to the unprotected part.

Thanks for your help. My level of knowledge is way below the rest of the board. My problem has been with the concept of maksing – even after reading several book selections on masking and accessign Adobe Help.

I think I understand it now. Once the mask is used and the changes are made to the lower layer, you simply discard the mask and the protected areas are not changed – just the unprotected level.
