Was anything ever resolved re the very slow initial generation of file previews in the CS File>Open dialog box? On my system it takes several seconds for the preview of a large file to appear. I know others were complaining of the same issue, but I’ve lost track of the threads.

Thanks

Several seconds? Consider yourself lucky. Mine took a couple of minutes for some of them.

ho, not sure if this is the one i remember, so i’ll just throw this out – did you run the reg file in the goodies folder to turn off thumbs in the open dialog? (or do you want them and they’re just too slow?)

Dave, it doesn’t work. I asked Chris what the thing was actually supposed to do but I never got an answer.

what doesn’t work derrick? turning it off or on? it says it "allows" (or not) thumbnails in the open dialog box.

I recently found an article on chaning the view of the open dialog (details, thumbnails, icons, etc.). if anyone’s interested i’ll post it. not sure if it’ll help w/this issue.

We were trying to get rid of the preview that is in the File|Open dialog, underneath the file list window. Near as I could tell this reg key didn’t do anything at all – off or on, CS or 7, and I know others tried it to no avail

OIC. the preview is different from thumbnails, i think.

Yes, dave, apparently the preview is hooked to the File Browser cache (create a new file and go to the open dialog, then look at your FB cache – a new file will have been created), so I assume it has nothing to do with psicon.dll or the Windows thumbs.db

"Several seconds" might have been an optimistic assesment.

Anyway, I take it that this has yet to be resolved.

You take it correctly.

OK, while we’re on the subject of "things that run like frozen molasses", has anyone tried the jpeg 2000 plugin in CS? Do you find it to be as irritatingly slow as I do? I think the previews (the source of the sluggishness on my machine) should be faster… a lot faster, and there should be an option to disable them altogether. Especially if there’s no way to speed them up.

Not as far as I know, dave. I just want to use it for my own archiving purposes, but it is very tedious in its current configuration.

is that something you really want to use for archiving if it’s not a widely supported industry standard (yet)? don’t know much about it, but what if it doesn’t catch on and you want to get at your files in 10 years. who knows if you’ll be able to re-activate cs version 1 in order to open them! (only half-joking.)
