Hello,

I’m creating all of the art assets for an upcoming sci-fi shareware game. The sprites will be created in a 3d application and will appear in the game as pre-rendered sprites (tga) with an alpha channel for transparency. The enemy units will be "electrified" so I will need to add an electricity effect to the sprites (similar to those novelty glass plasma balls or Dr. Frankensteins lab).

The animated sprites will be roughly 15 frames each. Each frame will have it’s own alpha channel. I will most-likely "hand-draw" the electricity on each successive layer. The problem I anticipate is that the electricity will not have a perfectly matched alpha channel for each frame. In other words, I can draw the electricity on each layer but it probably won’t appear in the game because the alpha channel created by my 3d application during rendering will block it out.

If someone can at least point me in the right direction I would really appreciate it.

I involved myself in something that made me think about games/sprite;

Yes, When you have the sprite frame (background layer with alpha channel) open in Photoshop; create a new layer on top of the backround layer and draw the Electricity on that. Then select all the Opaque part of the electricity layer and do from the menu; SELECT_>Save Selection, choose the existing Alpha channel and choose the ‘Add to Channel’ option,……….this will ‘merge’ the selection into the Current alpha channel.

Can I know more, lots more about the game and your previous experience etc.. etc. etc.. [people involvled, equipment, game details, time scale, software used, experience, previous projects, etc. etc.]. I await intereset in reading about it.

Thanks Hot_denim.

I’ll most-likely use that technique. Although, I may create the electricity in 3ds Max via plug-ins.

I’m mainly a 3d artist. I’m currently working on a couple PC titles. One of them is a theme pack for "3D Majic Mahjongg" by Suricate Software. The other one, mentioned in this thread is top secret 😉
Well, you know how it goes. I can’t give specifics but its a revival of an old classic. Retro 64 is the developer.

Both projects that I’m currently working on should be for sale in April or May. My primary software apps are 3ds Max 5.1, Character Studio 3.1, Photoshop 7, and 3D Gamestudio 3.

You can see some of my older work at www.optigon-cg.com. Unfortunately I haven’t had a chance to update the site in a while, but there’s still plenty to see.
