This is a problem that has been bugging me for a long time. I have many directories full of graphics images. I can’t even get to the image I want in the directory until all the photoshop icons load. It’s not bad if the image file starts with "A", but if it starts with "W",for example, it could take 10 minutes for the photoshop icons for all the files to load .
Anyone know a way around this?
I am using APS 7

PC or Mac?
make sure you have the thumbnail function set to CACHE, otherwise it has to re-create them each time instead of "remember" them. Control panel>folder options>uncheck "do not cache thumbnails"

make smaller directories in Explorer? use some subfolders try turning off thumbnails and use LIST
FWIW CS eliminates the creation of thumbnails for all PSD files

Thanks KatWoman. Unfortunately, that made no difference to the loading of the icons since I already had that unchecked, and I always use list instead of thumbnails. I guess I’ll just have to go with sub directories.
Thanks for the time and attention.

GEO,

On PC OS’s, the Detail View should load very quickly. I have several folders with near max files and it takes Explorer only seconds to do the full list. Now, I will say that XP (SP-1) likes to try and determine HOW to view a folder, especially with images in it, regardless of what the View setting is for folders. It’ll "take" my settings for a while, but then decide that on THAT morning, it will give me Thumbnails, regardless of how many times I’ve set the View for ALL folders. Even so, a quick View -> Details, halts the Thumbnail process, and gives me my list. I wish that XP would not try and anticipate my needs, even when I have expressly told it how to handle the folder(s).

You might want to check for fragmentation, or maybe a corrupt file, or two, in your folder – should be almost instantaneous. I’d run a defragmenter, and Chkdsk on the folder(s), just to be safe.

Also, if you’ve never changed the default, right-click on the Trashcan icon and click Propeties. Lower the percentage of disk space allowed for trash to somehing like 1% of disk space (instead of the, I think, 10% that is the default). This often speeds things up.

Defragmenting is good, too.
