This isn’t really a software question, but I figure you guys would know the answer. My monitor crapped out on me the other day, and it will no longer display any reds. Instead, it shows red as black. I can’t see any orange, purple, pink, or anything with the slightest red pigmentation.

I’ve tried everything I can, unsuccesfully to turn my monitor to grayscale. The monitor itself cannot be changed, so the software is my only option. Do any of you know how I could, using windows XP, change it to display grayscale instead of color?

(im using an ATI radeon 9200 card)

The monitor itself cannot be changed,

then you’re in big trouble.

I used to have a monitor that went blue. I extended it’s life by about a year by vigorously beating it on the side to shake up whatever was loose. One day it just died. 🙁

But I DID get an extra year’s use out of it. By the time it finally conked out there was a crack running all the way from the base over the top in the side from me beating it into working, daily.

note, if you’re going to try this, hit it in the center of one side (you may want to try both sides to see if you get better results on one or the other), towards the back, where the electron gun sits.

Try checking the monitor cable, look for any pins that are bent are broken in the connector

Whatever you do, don’t stand in front of the screen, staring at it whilst beating the sudes where the electron gun is. If the tube implodes, the electron gun can come flying into the faceplate, which SHOULD stop it but…..

I am serious!

You may also have the video driver for the red gun dead, and repairing that shouldn’t be diffucult. Don’t assume it’s the crt. So, before giving the box a beating, give it some TLC at a service shop.

Skylar,

Do any of you know how I could, using windows XP, change it to display
grayscale instead of color?<

Wouldn’t do you any good to do that if you could…..If the red gun isn’t working, the screen cannot produce a neutral grey regardless of what signals you feed it. Whites will still be just BLUE MAX+GREEN MAX (A Bright Cyan) and mid-tones a dirty greeny-blue colour…..

Flogging your monitor daily to get it to work??? Dave…that’s not nice. Man…I wonder what you do to your keyboard!

Don’t take your monitor in for repair. Generally it isn’t worth it if its over 2-3 years old. They will charge you an arm and a leg to fix it and it will probably fail anyway.(Did it twice, with the same results both times…extended the life for about 6mths at a cost of $400.00 each time.)

I heartily agree with that.

I have to replace my ageing Eizo 19" CRT and wondered what is the consensus re TFT and LCD screens as opposed to CRT’s for image manipulation, colour correction etc.
