What do I give up buying the $80 ColorVision spyder instead of the more expensive models? The pantone software they throw in might be valuable to someone but I don’t need it.

They don’t do something dumb like limiting the number of times the software can be instaled, do they?

Thanks

My boss got one for the department. It’s just plain unnecessary and lives in a box on a back shelf.

I believe that the less expensive version has different hardware, that is it includes the original Spider not the Spider2. So the difference is more than just software. Having said that I really can’t comment further regarding a comparison as I just have the Spider2 and never have tried the original Spider. I can tell you that the device works as advertised. Having a properly adjusted monitor is the first step toward good color management.

If you follow your link, then click on More info (located next to the Add to Cart button, it will take you to another page that has a compare folder tab. You can see the differences between the products and decide what would be best for your situation.

You get a more accurate profile on CRT’s with the more expensive calibration systems, and for LCDs the cheapest Sypder is very poor. I think you need to spend at least $200 to get a really good solution. Here are a couple of sites that reviewed various calibration systems which you may find interesting.

Even the cheapest Sypder is better than nothing or trying to calibrate by eyeing the patches like with Adobe Gamma, at least for most people.
