System: Dell 8300, 1 GB RAM, 120GB and 80GB Hard drive. HP Scanjet 3C and Nikon Coolscan 4000. Photoshop CS. Windows XP Home.

Had no problems up to now with the tools. Then scanned in 799 images and began editing. Of the 799, 20 files have produced the "permanent error send to Microsoft" when the clone, erase and healing brush tool is initially Alt+mouse click to select the source area. Can do tone and color corrections ok. The scanning device has no bearing on the problem since errors occur for flatbed and slide scanner images. Have latest updates (as far as I know) for both XP and CS. Error signature: App name=Photoshop.exe, AppVer=8.0.0.0, ModName=mmxcore.8bx, ModVer=8.0.0.0, Offset=00028238. Exception information: Code=0xc0000096,Flags=0x(all zeroes), Record=same as flags, Address=0x(9 zwores)4208238, etc. Same error information for all the failing images.

Any suggestions on the problem our how to get it fixed?

Thanks, Joe

dual cpu’s are expeiencing problems with a couple of tools. the temporary work around is to rename MultiProcessor Support.8BX. adobe is trying to work find a fix for it.

Sorry I did not mention it but I have two, Intel Pentium 4 2.60 GHz processors in the machine.

Dave, you mention the work around is to "rename Multi-Processor Support.8BK". Does this then negate the XP use of the mulit-processing?

Sounds like this has been reported earlier. Where should I look to track progress there?

Thanks again, Joe

no, just ps’s. i’m not sure, but i don’t think you’ll see a HUGE performance hit unless you’re working with really big files. temporary only anyway until the adobe guys figure it out and post a fix.

Just an update on the tool problem after talking with tech support. The "work-around" is as follows:
Go to C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS\Plug-Ins\Extensions Change the file type for fastcore, MultiProcessor Support and mmxcore from .8bx to something else like .old. That seems to work. Previously just changed the file name by prefixing a "zz" in front and did not help. Left zz in name and at suggestion of tech support changed the file extension and it worked.

My 799 files range in size from 218 KB to 40 MB. The 20 files that have the problem range from 765KB-781KB. 11 other files in this range work ok!

Now change them back one at a time and see when the problem returns — that will help us identify where the problem is.

(I can pretty much guarantee that FastCore isn’t the cause)

Chris,

By the time I looked at your message I had gone into all 20 files and finished editing them including use of the clone tool with no problems. Just now went and changed the three 8bx files back to original name and extension. Started Photoshop and went through 8 of the previous "bad" files and clone tool worked ok! Then rebotted and tried again and no problem. Just a note. I scan in all files as RGB. Most of the bad files are really grayscale so in editing them, I change them to grayscale; thus, the updated files are 1/3 the storage size when they were giving me trouble. I then went through four that stayed in RGB and still no clone problems but all four showed a 10-12 KB increase in file size even though there was no change in image size (no layering). Don’t know why since the only editing was level, brightness and sharpening.

If I encounter the problem again will do the steps you mention and update this topic.

Chris,

Found another clone error image. Same error. Changed only the mmxcore file extension to ".low" from ".8bx". All other files as normal. This one change eliminated the error. mmxcore is the module name given in the "Error Signature" Window for all these errors.

have you tried renaming the others one at a time too, or did you stop there? (in case it’s a combination that causes the error).
