what does CS mean in Photoshop CS

Maybe marketing people have problems with big numbers? Uh-oh: what are they going to do with Macromedia MX product names? I don’t think anyone ever found out if the MX was meant to signify something.

Actually, you’re on the right track. There is a marketing reason that companies are moving away from version numbers.

The United States Patent and Trademark Office does not permit getting a trademark on a number. Intel tried to get trademarks on "80486" and "486" when the 486 processor came out, and was denied. That’s why they abandoned the numbering scheme and renamed the 586 processor "Pentium."

Adobe has a trademark on the name "Photoshop," but they can not trademark the "8" in "Photoshop 8." They can, however, trademark the "CS" in "Photoshop CS."
