Have you tried "Select" then "Color Range" then clicking on the background close to the hair??

This topic gets covered quite a bit. Do a google on mask hair photoshop and you’ll find quite a few tutorials.

in photoshop 7 there’s something called the Extract Tool under Filter I believe which helps very much so with hair.
but then again i’m not sure what version of photoshop you’re using…. but good luck if you have it, it’s a time saver..

If you check out the current edition of Design Graphics magazine, you will find a tutorial for contouring hair. The tutorial is by Martin Evening (www.martinevening.com) and is very helpful. It covers advanced masking techniques for Photoshop CS.

You could also take a look at the channels palette and pick out one of the channels that has the highest constrast between the hair and the background. Make a copy of that channel and run a levels adjustment on the channel to increase the contrast between the hair and the background. Then use that as a mask to separate the subject from the background.

And if you want even more instruction, including that subject, from Martin Evening, his book, Adobe Photoshop for Photographers is a mine of useful info.

Apologies for leaving a message in non-english. What I wrote was:

This tutorial is a rather vague one. It would honor anybody who actually understands what is being done there to explain it here in regular English. For instance: at a certain point the tutor advises "to cut out a section with the pen tool". Obviously I understand that wrong cause with me the pentool just leaves a line on the picture

Erik, a selection is made out of the path further down the instructions and then a mask is made from the selection.

Good technique, badly written tutorial— your English is better and more readable

Look for other tutorials on "channel masking" or "contrast masking" for clarification….

Personally, I use a combination of channel masking and blend ranges on fine hair and fur, but his "darken" painting might be worth a try.
