Is there any way to disable PS7 from adding the word "copy" to the filename in the "Save As" Dialog?

E.G.: "FileName.psd" in PS7 becomes "FileName copy.(jpg, bmp, etc)"

…. just an annoyance of mine that would be nice to rectify (assuming there is a solution!)
Any help would be appreciated. Thanx in advance.

I also find it annoying.
I just experimented with it and found a little bug, maybe it’s just my machine. Seems that when constantly opening and closing the "Save As…" dialog box (using the keyboard of course), Photoshop somtimes adds "copy" to the filename and sometimes leaves it as it is. Same happens with the format selection combobox when saving an image with layers. The format’s been constantly changing from PSD to the original JPG.

1st, Thanx for the reply!

Actually, I’m trying to avoid having to rename the file after I’ve saved it…

I probably didn’t explain myself well… so I’ll try a more "verbose" version:
I save all my work in PSD format to keep the layers editable, but there are times when I need to flatten the final image to a JPG or BMP… so with my PSD file active in Photoshop, I use the "Save As" function to save the original PSD file as a JPG or BMP.

The problem is that Photoshop adds the word " copy" to my original PSD filename!
e.g. "MyFile_01.psd" becomes "MyFile_01 [copy].jpg" in the Save As Dialog… I can manually delete the word " copy" before I save the file – or rename the file after I’ve saved it – but I was hoping to find a way to get Photoshop to quit adding " copy" to my filename in the first place as it’s quite tedious to do it manually all the time.
I thought there might be a "hidden" preferences toggle to achieve this.

Thanx again for any input!

If you are using a Mac you can use my handy Applescript for this: http://www.sover.net/~hannigan/stripper.html

I was hoping someone would do a version for Windows but as far as I know no one has.

AFAIK, the word "Copy" only appears if you try to save a file in a format that isn’t suitable. For example, you try to save a file in JPEG, but it has layers. In that case, Photoshop suggests to save a (flattened) copy and helps you by suggesting the name with the word "copy".

That usually only happens whe you select Save a Copy …

It’s there to prevent you from overwriting the original name by a temporary moment of carelessness.

It’s not a suggestion. It’s forced on you. That kind of "help" I can do without. I’ve yet to see .jpg overwrite .psd. As long as you have the correct extensions there is no danger.

But this has been gone over and over on the Adobe forums. The only solutions are a script or a change in workflow or upgrade to CS.

I feel, that’s awkward. Why not just have a warning which can be disabled?

On my Comp. it happens when I use "Save As", not sure why… as I’m changing the file extension to .jpg or .bmp , there is no chance of overwriting the original .psd file…

No, not overly hard to fix – but annoying! If I have a PS file and I save it as a JPG… I know that it’s a copy of the original and there is absolutely no chance of overwriting the original PSD file since I’m Saving it as .JPG… – why can’t the default filename be the original: "FileName" + ".JPG instead of "FileName copy.JPG"? Exactly who are we trying to protect here? People who have a PSD file, then go to save it as JPG, but accidentally select PSD as the file extension – even without reading the dialogs… the worst that can happen is that you resave the file under the original filename… No Harm Done, Right! Even if someone flattened the image first… you would still be asked if you wanted to save over top of the original PSD file… Any fool that is fluent in Photoshop should know the answer to that question… and, if they don’t, they only make the mistake once…. I really don’t see the reason for the "so called" precaution! Just my opinion!

Exactly… if you’re even semi-fluent in PS you know that saving a file with a different file extension will not overwrite the original PSD file – even if you’re flattening the image…so who needs ".copy" added to the filename?

Why not give us the option of turning this (my opinion) utterly useless feature off?
