When trying to take a background away from an image I am left with a white background. Okay I will explain a bit better, I am trying to cut a part of a image to be used in another image in this case a person, I am using the polygonal lasoo tool to make my selection then inverseing the background and then edit cut to remove the background however at this point I am left with a white background as opposed to the blue and white tile effect I should be seeing and so when I try to move this image onto another the white background comes with it.

I would guess that you are working on the background layer. Change this to an ordinary layer by double clicking on it in the layers palette.

If the layer is a background layer it cannot be made transparent. (The checkerboard appearance is an indication of transparency.) As Geoff has suggested make the layer a regular layer BEFORE you do the selection. Or copy the background layer and paste it in as a new layer, that way you won’t chance destroying the image.

….and don’t forget to HIDE the background layer – otherwise you may delete something on background copy layer but original will show through… if you follow me…

And please, learn to use the Pen to make the selection rather than the polygonal lasso (unless your object is polygonal in shape).

As you load your image, add a new layer, make sure to have "color none" on the pop up menu when adding a new layer.
Then, any cut out on the image will show a tranparent backgroud.
