I have a map I want to print but it is covered in writing, the writing is one specific colour, Is there an easy way to take out that particular colour, as the map uses totally different colours to the writing.

help appreciated
thanks

No. You can take out the colour (and replace it by another colour), but that won’t bring back the map details that were hidden beneath the writing.

This sounds like a job for the Magic Wand. Set 0 for the tolerance and uncheck Contiguous, then click the color you want to remove. This selects all instances of that color. You can then replace it with any color you choose.

Isn’t it that you are left with a ghost white image of the text ? Then what would you do. I don’t see any other short cut to it… If you want to cover what was left of the text… Either Clone or Heal them away..

I’m writing a (fairly buggy) plugin which can automatically replace holes in images such as the ones caused by text over the top of objects. If your image is reasonably small, (<~1024×768) you can send it to me at and I’ll see if I can process it.

Dup the layer, delete the text from the upper layer, and then move the top layer slightly so that the empty areas are filled in material from adjacent areas. Use the clone tool to fix up any remaining bad spots. —

Nicholas, thanks for the offer but it is larger than that, I will try some of the other tips that have been suggested and see how it goes.

thanks for the input everyone.

Could you send it to me anyway..? I want to apply my filter to a section of it to see how good of a job it does :). If I have enough CPU time I might process the whole image.

Here’s a method that might work with your particular problem only – it is NOT a general tip to remove unwanted colours:

Go to Image / Adjustments / Channel mixer.
Tick the ‘Monochrome’ box.
Move the slider for the colour of your unwanted writing up until the marks disappear. Don’t overdo it.
Click OK. The image will now be monochrome but don’t panic. Select All and Copy. Then revert to your colour image in the History palette.
Image / Mode /Lab color.
In Channels palette select the Lightness channel and Paste. Select all channels and your marks will be gone.

Good for removing Biro pen marks on colour photos but it does affect other colours in your image. Use it in conjunction with a mask to limit the damage.

Hope it works!
John

Select color…spread it a bit…brush with the color behind the type. You might have to paint in some details.
