I would like to save out LOTS of layers as individual files as a batch process. It seems like it should be pretty simple.

thanks!

This has been discussed very recently on this forum. Someone has an action. You might like to do a forum search.

Tony,

I’ve fixed your link…….you had missed out the "=" between the ‘a href’ and the ‘http://’

If you have PS CS, there is also a default-installed script called "Export Layers To Files.js" – access it from the File > Scripts menu.

Len,

Thanks.

Trevor,

Double Thanks. I had no idea it was included with CS. Nice move Adobe.

Tony:

Is the assumption for an action of this nature that there are no adjustment layers in the target image? That would mess things up, right?

Trevor:

Have you checked out the JS to see if it’s smart enough to determine the number of layers, detect "top of layer stack" [or the functional equivalent] or some other mechanism to limit processing scope?

No, I have not checked it out, but failing that, there is another thread on the scripting part of this forum with another solution/script…

"saving layers as files with the layername as title < http://www.adobeforums.com/cgi-bin/webx?13@@.ef7f2cb.2ccd2fd 5/12>"

I only know how the one from Adobe Evangelists works. But in theory, if saving out adjustment layers will mess things up, then you as the user, shouldn’t save out individual layers.

Here’s the scenario: you have made an image with maybe 15 layers. You want to save them out as individual files, for whatever reason. The presumption is that they are currently in the form you want to save them out in – boy that’s an awkward way to phrase it – anyway, it would only mess things up if you were not prepared to have them saved as layers in the first place, if you get my meaning.

So "no", it wouldn’t mess things up, you just have to be prepared, since the base function is "I want to save out individual layers as files".

Peace,

Trevor:

Checked out the JS you referenced. (Very educational, thx.) This script has code that determines the number of layers and uses that integer for loop control. Pretty slick.

Tony:

FYI… The AdobeEvangelists .atn failed right out of the gate for me (PS 7.01) on 1st Save command. I modified the action so it now works, plus added an enhancement removing the requirement that one manually select the Background before playing the action as stated in the first Stop message.

Now that I’ve mucked with the action a bit, I now ‘get it.’ You’re right: No "harm" in saving a stand alone adjustment layer. Just "no point"! 🙂

In any event thx for pointing out that action. Good stuff to know.

Ya know, I’ve never had to do it, so I’ve never used the action. I have it, but have never used it.

My take on most actions is that require some personalization, and this particular one was written for PS 6, and if nothing else, gives a user a "proof of principle".

Thanks for letting me know that there may be issues with it though.

That’s a better way to say it <grin>.
