How can I batch resize a bunch of photos to a particular size at once? I want to open perhaps 5-10 photos and resize all of them to 640×480.

Do I need to create an action for this?

Depends on the software you use.

Try Irfanview: http://irfanview.com
for the simplest, free, solution.

If you are using PhotoShop Elements 2.0 or PhotoShop CS (and probably earlier versions), you can change file type, size, resolution and group names in one batch operation under the File command.

Copy the files to their own folder with only those files you want included
Within PS, click on Files/Batch Processing
Fill in the windows (boxes) to:
Put all the new files in a new destination folder
Copy all as a new file type (*.jpg to *.tif, for example) Copy all to a new size in inches or pixels (retain original preportions or assign new, 4×6 inches for example)
Copy all to a new resolution
Assign a new, common file name to all. All files will have the same prefix which you type in plus a serial number suffix.

If you do not want a particular function performed, leave that window blank (All boxes are greyed out until you fill them in.)
Your original files will remain as-is.

If you are unsure of a result, run a test first on a couple of files in their new folder. Don’t worry, you’re original files will not be effected.

Good luck! . . . . patrick

Have a play with ‘web photo gallery’ in Photoshop. A by product of this is it resizes all your photos and puts them in a folder.
Use:
FILE
AUTOMATE
WEB PHOTO GALLERY
