Enlarging 35mm slides in Photoshop

I was wondering what the best technique would be when enlarging scanned 35mm slides for printing. I scan them at a high dpi… say 3200, and they scan in at original size. For printing, I want to increase the size to say 8×10 range and reduce the dpi to the 300 range for printing on my Canon i9100. I can just changes the setting in the re size tab, and crop to final print, but I was wondering if that is a better way to maximize final print quality. Thanks.

So long as you do not have "Resample" checked on the Image Size dialog, you are doing the right thing to maximise quality.

300ppi [not DPI – that’s something else] is considered optimal. You can often go down nearer to 200. There is little advantage in being higher than 400 or so.

With that resolution of scan, you should be able to make nice big prints 15x10in, for example.
