I’ve had the same problem with two different effects.

effect 1- white background layer and a black layer over it the black layer set to disolve and opacity at 99 to get lots of white dots. My goal is to then apply a radial blur to get a "zooming through space look. When I merge the layers, the size of tyhe dots decreases and the number of them multiplies. When I blur it the effect is more dense than I wish.

effect 2-I created a sand background layer using noise and lighting effects. I the duplicated it a few times and painted on a mask, inverted it and deleted the exterior leaving me sandy images which I apllied some bevel, and used the multiply setting so that it looks like someone was writing in the sand. when I merge the layers, it changes. The color and detail in the upper layers gets washed out and completely destroys the effect I was going for.

I think it has something to do with ‘invisibility’, but I dunno!

Can anyone sort me out?

My guess in re the second one is that PS is doing something funky in re layer blend modes. To work around, Select all, then copy merged, then paste as a new layer or a new image.

My guess in re the first one is — are you sure you are viewing at 100% zoom throughout? Screens do strange stuff at lower zoom levels

Thanks JP, you pointed me in the right direction. As far as my starfield… zoom factor did play a role. I was viewing at 50% when I disolved the top layer giving me a nice density of litlle white holes. Even though my merged layer was viewed at 50% as well, when it merged the layers, it applied the disolve affect at a density equal to what it would have been had I been viewing at 100%. That’s a good thing to know. I don’t understand it. A glitch in the software maybe… oh well, it’s not mine to question why.

My sand problem was and over liberal use of noise and lightining effect. I had done this effect once before, but had deleted the project and wasn’t duplicating my steps accurately. I went back to a website where I saw a tutorial where a rock texture was being created, when I had a happy accident to get sand instead of rock. I guess I wasn’t leaving enough data to apply the Hue/Saturation effectively.

Confused but relileved! I just started with this amazing piece of software and I clearly have alot of hours to put in. I thought I had my hands full learning Protools… I guess I won’t be bored for a very long time.

Thanks again for your help.

Norm!!

P.S. anyone know of any good links for Photoshop tips. I’m primarily concerned with 3D text right know, but any trick that is truly cool is good to know.

I’ve already been to VTC.com, Planetphotoshop.com, & Photoshopcafe.com
