Saving History states to file

OK, CS can Save History states to a file as metadata. I’ve poured over the Help files, but cannot find out HOW! I find references to doing this, but never any explanation on how it is done, and there are no links, and no matches to keywords to establish the proceedure.

Can someone please explain, what is probably a very simple technique?

I can speak for Photoshop atm
Edit/Preferences/General Tab<< down towards the bottom check History Log and any other suitable preferences just below it.

Yes, exactly where you said it would be. Thanks for the info. I wish that I had noticed someplace in any of the Help files, where I could do this. As I set my preferences on Install, I missed this one completely.
