I used Photoshop CS to construct an image to post on a web site. I’ve done this thousands of times in Photoshop 6 and at least a hundred times since acquiring CS. On this particular occasion I simply blended a photo into the background color of the web site page added some text with some shadow effects and saved it as a GIF file. I routinely posted it to the web site and it looked fine on my XP machine using IE Explorer over a cable modem. However, I subsequently learned that 3 users using XP machines could not see it on their computers. All three were using IE Explorer over dial-ups, but through different ISPs. In one instance a Windows 98 machine at the same site using the same dial-up line could see the graphic. One of the users called a relative living 1000 miles away using an XP machine and she could see the graphic. I’ve called several friends and relatives using a variety of windows based machines and they all have been able to see the graphic. I’ve tried making a new graphic using different elements and have saved it in both GIF and JPEG format changing various settings in the formatting options and I’ve tried renaming the file. So far, these three users are still not able to see the graphic that I post. Any idea what might be causing this to happen?

If the image can’t be seen, then what shows instead?
Canyou post a link to this? the more people look into that, the more it’s "tested".

Nothing appears on their screen in place of the picture, not even a space for the image. Right-clicking on the spot where the image should be produces a menu that does not include "Save picture as". An image place holder does not appear. The URL for the Web page is:

<http://www.distinctgolf.com>

The image is for the "Auburn Golf Car Co.", in the left-hand column between the Wunderground weather logo and "Rate Your Round" button. The text link for "Auburn Golf Car" appears with no problem. BTW, moving the graphic around on the page did not help either.

Mmm… It shows perfectly on my browser. looking at the code I saw that this was the only image in thies column that had the align=middle tag in the reference line.

Is there a pattern in that people that can’t see it use the same browser (or ISP)

I’m on XP Pro… It doesn’t show up for me in IE 6 or in Netscape 7 or Netscape 4.79..

nor In Opera 5 or 7..

I even tried it in AOL 9.0’s browser.. no luck..

You should validate your page at the HTML validator at <http://www.w3.org>. I tried, but you will need the necessary doctype declaration on the first line to make it work.

You have at least one minor error: the use of align when you want valign in your images. The validator will find others, if there are any, and generally will solve your problem.

Rob,
Different ISP’s. Only thing that is similar is that these all use dial-ups. I’ve tried the graphic on different spots on the page without using the "align="center" element in the tag. No good.

Keith,
Are you using a high-speed connection? Are you physically located in Central Pennsylvania? That’s where all three of these users are located.

I am on win98SE.

I see the image "Acart.jpg" .. that *is* the one you are talking about right?

I see it every browser I have tried: Netscape 4.7 and 6.2, Opera 5.1, Mozilla 1.5, Slimbrowser and IE 6.0.

I wonder if it’s an XP issue. I can check on my laptop in a bit.

Bill,

The "middle"-attribute doesn’t exist IMHO. (its in your a href..with the image). I have IE5 via DSL (2Mbit/s)in the Netherlands.

a) ensure you have the image setup in sRGB.
b) use "save for web" with *no* embedded profile, and other "fancy" 😉 options turned off (progressive interlace, etc.).

thinking more…

my beanie is starting to smoke (-:

more along the lines of color profile issues:

also, ensure that it is in **8-bit** sRGB colorspace, but no tag.

Bill,

Your DTD is calling for HTML 4/Strict (which it doesn’t validate for BTW, showing 66 validation errors).

This forces the browser into Standards compliance mode rather than Quirks mode. Some browsers will have trouble with that.

If you change the DTD to HTML 4.01 transitional, it will render in Quirks mode (However, it still won’t validate correctly, but it will reduce the validation errors to a mere 24….)

Here’s a breakdown of the validation errors for 4.01/transitional:

The image, ACart.jpg, IS 8 bit, untagged RGB.
I don’t see anything special about it, shows fine in IE 6 with Win98SE, cable.
As far as HTML coding, IE is IE. Should show regardless of platform if using same browser, seems to me.

And btw, shows fine in Mozilla 1.5, and even in Netscape 4.8.
