Hi there,

I have recently purchased a lot of font families for my work, and in doing so my font folder tally has risen to over 5000 (yes this slows down photoshop’s loading times but hey…).

One problem I’m having is that upon loading , Photoshop 7.0 only displays all my fonts from A – G in the character list. Sometimes the rest of them appear after a while, but it’s very hit-and-miss. This is especially annoying as I use Helvetica a lot 😐

Anyone know why this is happening? Anything to do to stop this? (Apart from removing my fonts :P)

Thanks in advance.
Rich

Are you using a font manager?
If so, activate no more than 400 fonts at a time. I believe this is a windows limitation…

Thanks, could you recommend any of a suitable nature? I wouldn’t know where to start to be honest.

I am checking out Extensis Suitcase…seems to do the job. And Extensis Portfolio for images. But here is the situation I was in…I used Arial a lot…so I asked myself…what do I need with Helvetica …and other fonts that look just like them. And what do I need with Arial in Adobe, TrueType, and OpenType formats?

Yet…I still couldn’t toss them out…because collecting fonts is a sickness. There is no cure…but there is treatment. A font manager lets you package up the fonts you use and lets you activate them. The other fonts…the ones whose only real purpose is to act as a governor on the CPU to prevent overspeed….they are still there…and can still be used…but not in the way.

Is there a font displayer that will work with fonts that are not loaded? Suitcase will show the fonts to help me decide…but only a few at a time….not so good for thousands of fonts.

There is a performance limitation at approximately 1500 fonts.

Bitstream Font Reserve which has replaced Bitstream Font Navigator.

FontReserve alerts you at 400…
Seemed like Adobe ATM did too…

I’ve got over 2000 fonts, all active, and it works fine. Using Win2000. I’ve never seen such a limitation. The only computers I’ve ever seen with a limit to the number of fonts you could use were pre-OSX Macs. In OS9 and earlier, the limit was either 128 or 256, I forget which. OSX fixed this limitation, and as far as I know, Windows 95 and up never had the problem to begin with. (There may be a performance hit on slower systems, but there’s no defined cap that I’m aware of…)

Perhaps my incident was just on the computer I was using then… Thank you for the info…

You are like me (my font collection hoovers at about 3,500). Let me tell you that it’s time for Adobe Type Manager!

It’s absolutely ASTONISHING how much better things run if you keep active fonts to 200 or less. In addition it’s really nice to have groups like "simulated handwriting" or "old fashioned typesetting".

That’s because they are conservatively set up. And the problem is with the Adobe software, rather than Windows. Under normal circumstances,
1.5k fonts will be a limit for normal Windows apps. Adobe, in their
wisdom decided that rewriting fonts lists and creating their own lists every time they launch was a good idea. So, it clogs up the launch. Then, they also decided that people don’t need that many fonts really, do they?

Personally, I find using a font manager works well and I normally only have a couple of hundred basic fonts installed. I just swap in an out the fonts I need at the time. Makes all font-using apps load more quickly and prevents the clunky Adobe font handling being a problem.

Yes. Though I find ATM really a pain to use and I’ve always used Bitstream. But, whatever works for you.. 😉

Setting up ATM is a pain, I agree. Once it’s set up I find it pretty easy to use. Still I got mine cheap as part of a package deal so there you have it <grin>. Still I might check out bitstream anyway.

Font Reserve. I had Navigator and Font Reserve is just a better version of that. It’s easy to use and does the job well.
