For about a month or so I have been trying to take a picture of a face and take the sharp outlines (jawbone, nose, eyes, ears, and some hair) to create an outline of the face with a white background. You can see an example here, www.lost-in-translation.com after the intro trailer while it loads the main site there is an out line of Scarlett Johansson with her head on Bill Murray’s shoulder. I have tried a couple of different approaches and I’ve gotten close to the result that I want, but never near enough to something that I can actually use. I am a quite dedicated amateur. Would anyone please help me sleep at night and get this problem solved. I’m using Photoshop 7.

Thanks

That is one of the many variations of a Pencil Sketch technique. Google Pencil Sketch Tutorial Photoshop, and you’ll get a million hits.

Here’s an interesting one…

step 1: Alt-double-click the background layer of your image and create a new layer beneath this one. Fill this new layer with white.

step 2: Duplicate the image layer (press ctrl-j or layer -> duplicate layer). You should have three layers now.

step 3: Apply your gaussian blur to the topmost layer and apply a color burn blending mode to it.

step 4: Apply an exclusion blending mode to the middle layer.

step 5: Apply an Invert adjustment layer. You can now merge these layers or place them in their own layer set to allow for editing and adjustment later.

And yet another

1. With the origional image open, duplicate the layer. =(Layer 1)

2. Desaturate Layer 1 (Image/ Adjustments/Desaturate)

3. Duplicate layer 1. =(Layer 2)

4. Invert layer 2. (Image/adjustments/invert)

5. Change the blending mode of layer 2 to Color Dodge.
The display will turn completely white.

6. Apply a gaussian blur to layer 2. The amount of blur will determine the width of the sketch lines.

You can try different blurring tools. eg median, multiple cycles of despeckle etc.

You can now delete the origional layer or you can move it above Layer 2 and reduce the opacity to get a watercolor look to the sketch.

Peace,
Tony
