Corel 9 to PS7 and vice versa?

I have to create and edit ads for a small-newspaper which uses Corel9 for it’s copy set-up – I will need to import/export font and vector graphics from PS7 to Corel9 and vice-versa. Any suggestions on a suitable file format for this?

I have Corel9 but have found it a little cumbersome and tedious (plus it keeps crashing on me, and, yes – it’s a legit install).

Ultimately, I’d like to prepare the ad in PS7 and export it to Corel with layers, etc. intact…. Is this possible, or should I bite the bullet and learn Corel better?

PS. Not sure if it matters, but I’m running XP pro – are there conflicts with Corel 9?

Thanx in advance for any help.

Do you have both Corel 9 service packs installed? This is important…

No. Corel Draw will try to import any vectorized format as Draw objects, and it’s import filters are far from perfect. And it’s a one-way trip.

That’s because it’s really not designed to do that sort of layout.

It’s be *lots* better if you could use InDesign instead. All of the above issues would dissapear, plus a host of other annoyances and speed issues.

*** Preparing ads in PS is less than optimal. PS is not intended to layout text. Prepare your ads in Draw in the first place. If part of the ad has a bitmap, this is what PS is for – to prepare it for a page layout app of your choice.

I have Corel9 but have found it a little cumbersome and tedious (plus it
keeps crashing on me, and, yes – it’s a legit install).

*** Coreldraw 9 should run stable as a rock. Cumbersome and tedious? If that’s the case, Illus. must seem like a death sentence. 🙂 Draw is the most intuitive app of it’s kind. While Illus. outsells Draw today, more people make real money using Draw because of it’s massive user base over the last decade. You could load a copy of illus on every Mac in existence and the Qty would still pale against Draw’s. All that matters is finding a tool that works for you. Even Freehand is far more usable than Illus to me.

Ultimately, I’d like to prepare the ad in PS7 and export it to Corel with layers, etc. intact…. Is this possible, or should I bite the bullet and learn Corel better?

*** Learning Draw better would help immensely – you’ll have access to appropriate tools for laying out text and for quickly changing colors on vector shapes. Come on over the CorelDRAW user groups at the Corel site and we’ll help you get set up. You’ll find mature people who have real prepress experience offering helpful advice at at every turn. Nope, up until two days ago I didn’t even have Corel on my system….

I’ve actually reinstalled CorelDRAW9 since posting this – this time with NAV2003 disabled and it seems to be working infinitely better (so far)… at least the comp. hasn’t crashed since – but I will look into the service packs as you suggested.

Thanx for the info,

Thanx for the input, Eric… unfortunately I don’t have InDesign – so for me, this could be opening another bag of worms. A)forking out the cash for a new Prog. B)learning to use a new Prog. that may or may not resolve the import/export issues that I’m already facing with PS7.

As mentioned, I do have CorelDraw9 – so, despite my inexperience with the program, at least I won’t have the import/export problems when I get more proficient using it….

Thanx again.

Litron:
Gotcha – I mainly wanted to use PS because I’m already familiar with it… I was kind of hoping that I wouldn’t have to learn a whole new program and a whole new skill-set to create relatively simple font-based ads… but the more I play with CD9 the more I’m beginning to see your point.

I’ve reinstalled CD9 (this time with NAV2003 disabled) and the program hasn’t crashed since – my own fault for not reading the NOTES section first… as for Illustrator – I’ve used it and I’m still alive (barely), I just mainly prefer to design in PS as I do a lot of vector based graphics and I wasn’t overly impressed when I tried to import paths, etc. from Illustrator into PS.

Thanx for the invite… I just may have to take you up on that when I get a few more ads under my belt – I’m under a bit of tight schedule trying to make a deadline and this paper has 32 ads (all my responsibility) that are run on a weekly basis… fortunately some are repeats… lol.

There was a bit of urgency here because I certainly didn’t want to lose the account, could be a few $$$ when all is said and done… so thanx to everyone for your input, it was greatly appreciated.

Often inexperienced folks bring me their artwork to prepare for the press…

When they’ve dropped a layer style onto a text string in PS, in their mind they’ve conquered the world of digital graphics! 🙂

*** If you do a lot of vector work, you’ll generally want to work within a vector app. Profound, eh? 🙂

Describe your workflow a bit here… Are you turning every possible vector component into a whiz-bang layer-styled thing after bringing in PS?

For being a Draw package, yes. I have 12, and still prefer the way it works to Illustrator.

It would. Indy’s working integration with Photoshop is par excellence.

Look – don’t mind me. I’m a raging InDesign convertand I’ll recommend it to anyone. Of course, I’ve got damned good reasons for doing so, but you’ve got a course in mind already.

As mentioned, I do have CorelDraw9 – so, despite my inexperience with the program, at least I won’t have the import/export problems when I get more proficient using it….

Don’t try to round-trip your graphics. Either don’t worry about losing the vectors (and I’d hate that) or learn to lay out in Corel Draw.

And, if you go this route, do yourself a favor and update to Draw 12. They’ve improved a lot of stuff, most especially the import filters. Still not perfect, just much better, meaning fewer headaches for you.

Thanx again.

You bet.

Wow, Thanx!

The http link didn’t work for me (with Corel Download Manager), but the ftp link did. Turns out they have the first build stored there as well… I just changed the ftp address to reflect the build folder and file name in your first link (I’ve included the full path below if anyone is interested).

I haven’t had a chance to install them yet, but thanx again for all the help.

That’s true. I use PS to image edit, but use Corel Photopaint, kindly provided with Draw as my image viewer (well, what else can you do with it? <g>).

Hey now, Photo-PAINT is in many ways a serious contender to PS. According to Dan Margulis, the PS guru who reviewed it!

I love PP, especially version 9. The round trip workflow between Draw and PP is incredible.

LOL! I actually quite like PP but it doesn’t have the printing ability of PS for one thing and there quite a number of other areas where it can compete, but always comes second. If I didn’t have PS, I’d probably go to PP because it’s printing is better than elements, but otherwise…
