I recently found that the JPEG files I saved using PS6 couldn’t be opened in MS Photo Editor nor Corel Draw. Why?

Strange. Are you sure they aren’t damaged – try opening them again in PS, and if they open, resave them under a new name. If that doesn’t work, I’m baffled.

JPEG files support a series of internal pointers for EXIF data, thumbnails, etc. PS handles and uses them as necessary. I can understand M$ not implementing all of them properly per the JPEG spec, but Corel surely would.

If all else fails, save them asd TIFFs.

Most likely, they were saved as "progressive" JPG’s, which will cause a myriad of problems with many programs and MAC viewers in particular. Open in PS, make sure that "Baseline" is checked and that "Progressive" is unchecked. Save, then
see if they open in your apps.

I didn’t save it as progressive. I saved them as Baseline Optimized. I used to save everything in TIFF. But I have to send the files to my friends/clients recently who didn’t have Photoshop. I burnt the files on CD. I have double checked the CD and all files were okay – at least I could open them (at that time I used PS to open the files). They called me that they couldn’t open them using Corel Draw. I didn’t beleive them and burnt another CDs for them. Eventually I tried myself to open them using MS Photo Editior. It came up error message that it couldn’t open the files. Then, I tried to open the same files by using PS – no problem at all. So, I don’t know what’s wrong.

Older versions of CorelDraw have very poor JPG filters. If you have v6 or earlier, without all patches applied, operning or importing a JPG will cause Corel to hang.

I have not had any trouble importing JPGs into CorelDraw v10 but given the filter history, a stray marker could throw a lot off in CorelDraw.
