How do I crop out an image to get rid of the background.

For example …. a photo of a person … I want the person cut out the same way as I would if I took a pair of scissors to the photo. Then I can place the person over top of a completely different background.

I can’t seemt to find the tools or procedure to do this

I usually start with the magic wand (w key) on something like 60%, depending on contrasts in the background, then decrease the tolerance of this tool until it gets inefficient (holding down the shift key, of course, to add to selection. I then press the q key and the e key, to get the quick mask and eraser, and continue erasing the little red parts remaining within the selection. Go back and forth betweeen the quick mask and marching ants, toggling between them with the q key.(It’s easier to find the bits you missed in the marching ants setting.)

When you’re happy with your selection, make sure you’re in the marching ants mode, go to select, choose "feather", and insert an appropriate value, probably something between 2 and 6, depending on the size of the image.

Now press ctrl c, ctrl n, choose your background, and press ctrl v. Voila!
