pardon the interruption

just started working with InDesign 2.02 and while its very good, have some questions here and there… couldnt find an InDesign newsgroup… anybody know of a good forum or anything?

is there anyway to simply open an Illustrator 9 vector file in InDesign and have it come in as an editable vector shape?

….you need to upgrade to CS (3.0). The difference isn’t quite as great as the jump from Quark, but it is big, especially in speed.

adobe.indesign.windows

You cannot post properly to this group without registering on the Adobe site and picking it up from their newsserver, but your isp may carry it for you to read if that’s all you’re after.

You can also read it through the Adobe site, but the web interface sucks, imho.

Open in Illustrator, copy, paste in Indy. Make sure Illy is set to use AICB format in while copying in your preferences.

I don’t reccomend it, though. And make sure you’re not pushing bitmaps through in this way.

how come? this is a fairly complicated vector shape. I mean i could do whatever i wanted in illustrator, fill it with xyz gradient, and THEN place it in InDesign.. .probly the best way to go….but… what kinda bad stuff could happen?

No he meant you need to register at the Adobe site to be able to post. You need an ID and password for that forum. Some newsproviders (like cox here) give those adobe forums as a newsgroup, but that is read only.

Registered for the forums, I mean. You cannot post to them without a username and password.

The graphic becomes embedded, which has in the past been a sure ticket to output hell.

this is a fairly complicated vector shape.

The more complicated, the more likely problems.

Crashing, document corruption, bloated file sizes, trouble outputting. You may have no trouble at all with more basic shapes, but I’ve been burned enough I simply won’t do it anymore.

Indy may one day solve this problem, but from the forums that doesn’t yet appear to be the case.

Hey, there are plenty of shortcuts that would be handy and time saving if it weren’t for the inconvenience of massive technical problems. I’ll be happy to use them right after some genius works the bugs out.

But do upgrade to CS; that’s a reliable time-saver that actually makes life on the technical end easier.
