Problem: When my in house LAN is active (i.e., cables in place and/or hub active) PS 7.0 has just recently started to take a long time to load. No splash screen comes up. Just the Photoshop blank screen.

I can tell (via task monitor) that what is happening is that Photoshop is probing the LAN four, maybe five times. THEN (after about a 60-90 seconds) the flash screen appears and the PS finishes loading up in about 5-10 seconds on my fastest machine.

I cannot think of anything that I have done to change the LAN nor the Photoshop, except that I sometimes used the Photoshop browser tag dropdown to bring in working files from other computers on the LAN.

Systems:(1) Win XP on 3.8 GHz ADM machine
(2) Win 2000 on a 2.8 Pentium machine
(3) Win 98SE on a 2.4 Pentium machine.
Each system has its own PS 7.0 and the LAN is a simple CAT 5 cabled linkup via a D-link switch

I swear I had used this setup for months with absolutely no problem and very fast PS 7.0 load —- until just last week.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? Any suggestions? I cannot find anyway to force the PS 7.0 to not go on the LAN (Workgroups are disabled). Indeed, I cannot find any reason for it to be trying to get on the LAN.

Thanks for any suggestions or debug strategies.

Just a guess here. Do you have a drive "mapped" via the LAN, from one of the other computers? This would be designating the drive as "mapped" in WinExplorer/My Computer. There should not be any problem if you just Opened a doc/image from the other computer, as I do that all the time, with no slow- down. Some years back, I did map a drive, with a lot of images on it, and a similar thing happened. Having it mapped did not speed up any processes, but did slow down a few others.

Thanks you, Hunt, for the suggestions.

No that is not the problem. But while taking a look at it I noted that I had set a printer as default that WAS on another computer in the LAN. Reset the default printer on the local computer to be one on the local computer and BINGO! 10 second loads again.
MORAL: PS seems to look for printers even before it starts to load the OPS files.
Thanks for the feedback.

Good news! Thanks for the feedback, in case someone else has the same problem. Now, I’ll suggest Default Printer, AWA mapped LAN drives. Usually, one never knows if their suggestion helped at all, or what the final solution was. Your comment is appreciated.
