I have a square graphic. I want to make it twice as wide. Instead of stretching it evenly, I would like it to stretch gradually more and more until it reaches the end, where it has a warped effect. So the left side of the picture is barely stretched at all, and and the right end it becomes extremely stretched. I could accomplish this by doing many, many, small meticulous stretches but am wondering if there is a trick to doing this, or a filter?

Select the layer (even if that layer is the background layer) that your square is in. Click CTRL A (windows) or CMND A (Macintosh) to select everything. Click CTRL T to select the Transform option for your square. Highlight your cursor over one of the small square points of the square until your cursor arror turns into a horizontal arrow that points in both directions. Drag the left corner to the left to stretch. Go and then do the same thing to the right corner (drag to the right) to stretch the other end. You can even drag it off screen. Once it looks like you want it, click the ENTER key on your keyboard. That’s It!

That won’t "accelerate" the stretch. Look into displacement maps (Filter>Distort>Displace)with gradients. Need to do some experimenting though. There are some displacement tutorials on the web.
