Photoshop CS problem

I opened a .psd file in Photoshop CS and used the eyedropper tool on a red region of the original. When I tried to paint with this same red or use the fill bucket, the red had actually changed to a lighter value (CMYK values reduced by 3 percentage points).

Trying the same thing again with this new red reduced the CMYK values once again.

I was painting in ‘normal’ mode and at 100% opacity.

What could be causing this effect?

What is the Sample setting in the Eyedropper Options? You might have it too broad and it is doing an average of more than one pixel. I’ll open up a PSD and check out the problem to see if anything else jumps up at me.

I was able to get close to your situation with 5×5 Sample Size, but in my case the colour was actually darker.

One thought too – are you taking a sample from the Background Layer in the PSD, or from a Layer that may have its Opacity down a notch? It’s easy, when working with Layer Opacity to run the slider and get 97%+/- when you think you have it back to 100%. Also, if you have any Adjustment Layers active, you will want to turn them off, when taking the sample and also when you paint. You can then turn them back on, when done. Adjustment Layers being active can cause similar problems with the Clone Tool. Just turn ’em off, do the work, and turn ’em back on again.

Good luck and let us know if you find some other problem that is causing you the pain.
