Hello, I have created a mortgage/realestate website for a company (actually it’s two companies in one domain with a same owner) located in Illinois. I would greatly appreciate any comments, suggestions or constructive criticisms that might help in improving its’ usability and resourcefulness. Thank you very much.

Sadly, it’s all over the place in Firefox 1.5. Table parts far too low and not level with other parts. Apart from that, the colours, layout etc have potential.

The pages don’t have a valid doctype: you need to add
http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd before the closing ‘>’. Firefox and other browsers don’t work well without this and IE will go into "quirks" mode without it – so you’re essentially designing for the older IE.

The problem in Firefox is because your two main content blocks are in a wrapper that’s 610 but by the time you add the size of the content blocks with their padding, the total width is 630. The padding on the left box is added to its width in the browser’s rendering.

Maybe you want to check out the Dreamweaver newsgroup
(forums.macromedia.com).

Otherwise, nice looking site.

It’s pretty fragile. Sending it a corrupted cookie gave me a nice full path disclosure:

CFID, CFTOKEN contains invalid characters.
This exception is caused by either broken links, or security attacks. The invalid id is ‘

The error occurred in

I guess the best thing to do is to get as many browsers on your computer (if possible for a pc and a mac) to check your work before going on line, to save you a lot of work afterwards.

I use Netscape and things seemed to function okay, which is weird because it, too, uses the Mozilla engine.

Two comments. First, I absolutely hate index pages that have "click here to enter the site" things. Just put up the site. Here, you have two sites, so it is slightly different but still a pain. You can’t get the owner to pony up for another domain name (or two)? Or find a way to put more basic info on the first page, like the MLS info (which is what most people probably want).

Second, you are in the real estate business. When I hover over a tab (like our products) or link in Netscape, I don’t get a pop-up saying what it is. In IE, I do over the tabs. You should check accessibility standards to make sure you have it done right because of Fair Housing concerns.

Thanks everyone for commenting on this site. I really appreciate it.

I didn’t realize how visually distorted the site was when using Firefox and Opera… I think it’s the same with Netscape too. Flo Nelson was right on about the width of the wrapper. I brought it down to 590px and they all seem to fit-in pretty well. I have installed all of the browsers and will make sure to test on each of them before publishing.

As far as the fragility that Derek Fountain mentioned, I think setting up a custom error page will solve the issue. This way, no one will have access to error messages. The only reason why i haven’t set this up already is because my host company (One World Hosting) won’t allow a custom cfm error file, because we are on a shared server. I know that hostek (and I’m sure many other hosting companies) offer this functionality. Do you guys have any favorite hosting companies?

For the index page, I think I will set up a page where highlights from both companies are displayed. (obviously provide links) This way, the user will have a little more information before proceeding.

Thanks again,
