While running Photoshop to modify an existing .jpg file I received following error:

Application Error
Instruction at 0x77fcc441 referenced memory at 0x00000000 Memory could not be read

When I click OK Photoshop terminates.

I am using the Paint Bucket tool to fill in a bounded area of a picture with a new color. After doing the Paint Bucket click for about 4th or 5th time I got the above error, then the program dies.

I have done this operation in the past with out problems but it is broke now???

Thanks,
Mike

If it used to work but now doesn’t the cure is almost always to trash/reset preferences.

Rather than the Paint Bucket, can you make a good selection and Edit>Fill (Alt-Delete)?

Looks suspiciously like a RAM or operating system error.

You are making a mistake.

The Paint Bucket tool is not a fill tool. It is not intended to fill a selected area with color.

Other paint programs have a Paint Bucket tool which fills a selected area with color; this is probably why thkinking that Photoshop’s Paint Bucket is a fill tool is the #1 Photoshop mistake made by newbies.

The Paint Bucket is actually a combination Fill tool/Magic Wand tool. Its purpose is to examine the color of the pixel you click on, then spread out in all directions, filling as it goes, until it encounters a border of a different color.

When you become more proficient in Photoshop, you will probably never use the Paint Bucket again. (I have not touched it in years.)

Photoshop does not have a Fill tool because there is an easier, faster way. In Photoshop, the way to fill an area with color is incredibly simple: you hold down the ALT key on your keyboard and press the Backspace key.

Option+Delete for foreground Fill on Mac, Command+Delete for background Fill.

I’m no PS expert, but I had forgotten I even had a paint bucket, LOL. I may have to play with it again.

Yes, I haven’t touched the Paint bucket in years too, but this Russell Brown movie

made me think it might be a useful tool in some cases. But….I watched the movie, liked the technique, but still haven’t used the tool anyway 🙂 Just like the eraser tool.

And, chances are, that your system is processing the attempt to use the Paint Bucket. Depending on the image and its complexity, this might take a while. By hitting the Paint Bucket Tool repeatedly, you are probably generating an error, by requsting that a running process be run again, and again, and…

The most common cause of Photoshop crashes is video driver problems.

1) go into your display properties, chase down the troubleshooting tab, and back off the hardware acceleration slider. If that fixes the crash, it’s definitely video related.

2) whether or not the accel slider has an effect, make sure you have the newest drivers installed, and I also recommend that you install the latest version of DirectX.
