I’m using CS. Seems like Save As a Copy used to work in earlier versions but I can’t get it to work in CS.

When I select "Save As" and then check the Copy box and click save it always says "You already have a file by that name. Want to replace it?" If I say yes it does as expected, it replaces the file of the same name on the disk with the one in the editor. Exactly what I’m trying to avoid by saving as a copy. What gives?

Hmmm. Have you tried adjusting the name of the file so that it’s different than the file name you already have saved?

When you check the copy box does it automatically add the word ‘copy’ to the name field? If so, it should work fine unless that file name really does already exist; just type in a new name (add a number or something). If it’s not adding the word copy, seems something’s wrong. Maybe trash prefs?

But definitely, when it warns you the file name already exists, say no, then rename the copy.

Then what would be the point of Copy?

So, you’re suggesting there’s a file that contains my preferences and this file may be corrupt. Is that correct? If so, where do I find this file and can I just delete it and start it over?

The easiest way to reset the prefs
file is to start photoshop and then IMMEDIATELY press control-alt-shift (as PS is starting up). (It’s safe to try as this produces a dialog box asking if you want to reset them).

I doubt this is a prefs issue, because there is nothing you can change in the prefs for this.

I agree. In previous versions it used to add "copy" to the file name and not overwrite. That’s how it should work. I suspect a bug.

My copy of Photoshop (CS2 for Mac) still does that…

In any event, the OP would be advised to add a letter or other designation to the file’s name so he’ll have the two files.

John McWilliams

When asked why he still lives in the UK despite working so much in the US, John Cleese had this to say:
Number one, we speak English and you don’t.
Number two, when we hold a world championship for a particular sport, we invite teams from other countries.
Number three, when one meets the Head of State in England, one has to go down on one knee only.

I understand I can always rename the file, but that takes more time than just hitting Save As Copy Click

But what about multiple copies?

I number mine since I may end up with +5-10 progressions/versions of the same file.

for myself I am happy it stopped auto adding the word copy to save as with the CS version
I prefer a different naming method for my copies (file name plus A,B,C etc) and because it leaves a space in the name

So does my copy of PS 7. I think it’s a bug specific to CS.

Then just use Save As. Save As with copy SHOULD add "copy". That’s the point. If you Save As with a new name you are of course making a new file.

Easy, just DON’T Check the "Copy" box which asks that the word Copy be added.

Why are you jumping down my throat about this?

Re-read what I wrote. I didn’t say that the easiest way (to fix the issue) was to reset the prefs – he was already considering that – my suggestion was the easiest way TO reset the prefs – big difference.

I’m not suggesting it’s going to fix anything – only that if he wants to try it, then this is the easiest way.

And yes I have used it, and it works just fine.

I doubt it too – never suggested that it was.

You can go to image -> duplicate and hit Ctrl S instead.

I still have a copy of CS as well, and indeed it doesn’t add the word ‘copy’. Maybe a bug, maybe a ‘feature’ that Adobe decided wasn’t such a good idea after all.
