MSCONFIG

For Windows XP users, if you want to see what’s starting up on your computer, you
can use the MSCONFIG utility at the START/RUN… box.

It will show you what ‘secret’ programs are running. I use this along with CTRL – ALT – DEL
to get the Task Manager. I’ve been able to spot viral programs this way. Also you can use
Windows’ SYSTEM RESTORE to recover from viruses or viral like behaviors. I do it all the
time since I don’t use virus programs (slows down system terribly…and I have a blazing system).

Just a tip for those who did not know.

I also don’t use virus programs. I use anti virus programs. 🙂

I have no idea what the moron meant when he said "I don’t use virus programs".

Why not get an anti-virus program and just run it in your downtime when you’re sleeping or whatever? Doesn’t have to always be on. Beats the hell out of using System Restore over and over, which isn’t going to get rid of everything anyway.

Here’s a tip for you – people who don’t use AV are the reason there are so many viruses propagated.

And if you’re too paranoid, get the RegCleaner.

www.jv16.org

It’s startup tab has everything that starts from registry.

This is a bit OT, but I’ve found out that WinXP firewall is capable of blocking almost all malicious inbound traffic (at least as much as any other firewall software out there). But it doesn’t block outbound traffic, so it can’t stop trojans, virii, or Photoshop CS from calling home. You need to have a separate firewall app that can: 1. block outbound traffic, 2. that can detect when an app or a DLL has changed and start blocking it, 3. that will not mess up the WinXP firewall.

ZoneAlarm and Sygate Personal Firewall are two progs that can do the above.

Which is true. Almost makes you believe the rumors that most virus or worms are actually created by those selling anti virus software.
If you’re totally against virus software, you could always use www.mynetwatchman.com or http://www.dshield.org/ and at least let someone else handle watching your machine for virus.
They’re doing it already anyway’s.

I don’t need it. I’ve never had a trojan, spyware, or a virus on any of my computers. Why? Because I use a firewall, AV, a trojan scanner and spyware scanner.

The WinXP firewall is better than nothing – just.

ZoneAlarm and Sygate Personal Firewall are two progs that can do the above.

And Outpost is far better than either.

Easier to set up for beginners, but has a lot more flexibility than the others in that you can delve as deeply as you want into setting up the firewall. it also uses plug -ins which allow it to do a lot more than the others. Also, it has a much smaller footprint, uses less resources and is more efficient in terms of system use. Finally, it doesn’t crash your system like ZA is prone to do every time they come up with a new update <g>.

All in all, it’s a much more professional solution.

Yeah, that does sound like a nice little prog. I’m quite satisfied with Sygate, tho. It’s footprint is as twice as large as ZA, but it doesn’t crash the system. And it has the ability to detect program changes. That’s all I need. Didn’t even need to go through much setting up.

Nothing wrong with Sygate, I just found Outpost was better. Either are way better than ZA anyway 🙂
