Does anyone have any knowledge regarding the above site. It comes in with the following address:
http://udmurtiaware.com/
Is it for real or too good to be true. They are advertising Photoshop CS2 ver 9 for $69-99. Has anyone used their software? I would be interested in your experiences.

Well, let’s see. For starters, the Terms and Conditions say:

You cannot register the software with the manufacturer and updates are available not for all the products

Already, that shows you it is illegal pirated software. Under NO circumstances is legal software ever unregisterable; legal software, even legal OEM bundles, can always be registered.

Now let us look at the site itself:

PF is French Polynesia. The person running the site has registered it out of Polynesia to make it much more difficult for him to be arrested and presecuted for copyright infringement or fraud. If you ever have a problem or want your money back, good luck!

And look at the name servers: oemsalo.com. Oemsalo.com is also registered by the same guy, also in French Polynesia, and is blacklisted as a known spam site:

http://www.joewein.de/sw/bl-log-2005-12-29.htm

The "oemsalo.com" name server is used as a name server for many, many criminal and spammer-advertised sites, including sites that advertise fake "penis pills," mirror pirate/bootleg software sites (such as buhlomat.com, a mirror of the pirate software site you are asking about), and so forth.

The site udmurtiaware.com and the name server oemsalo.com are registered in French Polynesia, but they are not hosted there. They are hosted in China, on China Netcom, a Web hosting service that specializes in (among other things) offshore hosting for illegal enterprises, including fake pill, money laundering, and pirate software sites"

This is the same Web host that Leo Kuvayev, the leader of the so-called "Russian Spam Gang" and a person affiliated with Russian organized crime, uses to host *his* pirate software sites. Leo Kuvayev makes a ton of money on behalf of Russian organized crime by selling bootleg software through Web sites just like the one you are mentioning, registered under fake names in various foregin countres. I do not know if udmurtiaware.com is one of his domains or not, but it seems likely.

————

In other words, the site is registered in a name that may be bogus in French Polynesia, and is hosted on servers in China that are known to be used by Russian organized crime for hosting sites that sell illegal bootleg software. Now, what do you think? Sound like a legitimate site to you?

This is obviously illicit. Check this out from their terms page:
2.3. You cannot register the software with the manufacturer and updates are
available not for all the products;
2.4. You do not receive printed license documentation;

I’m guessing that if you decide to purchase, you will receive a pointer to some copy of warez that is free in the first place, and simply say goodbye to your money. Next month you may find that your credit card number has been busy purchasing things for people you do not know. While that mess could be sorted between yourself and your credit card company, any other problems you might have will require a civil suit filed in Shangdong province, where this site is hosted.

Just wanted confirmation for what I already suspected. I have found that if it looks to good to be true, it usually is. Anyway, thanks for the corroboration, I appreciate it.

Follow the reply, it shows you some of the means to find frauds BESIDES the OBVIOUS that something too good to be true – is.

As the technology shifts, there are more and more ways to deceive people and commit crimes. It’s best to know everything there is to know, or we are just passive victims.

What’s dearly missing in this New Frontier of the ‘net is the equivalent of the good old Six-Gun. "High noon at the Clock Tower, Mr. Nigerian Scammer!", that sort of thing.

Quite simple, really.

The registration information for any Web site is available quite simply by doing a "whois" query; if you go to whois.net (or if you have a Mac or a Linux machine and just type "whois domainname.com" into a command line), you will find the information about who owns the site and who controls it.

Information about big-name spammers is easy to come by; Spamhaus maintains a great deal of information about them (including information about affiliation with organized crime groups), and I read news.admin.net-abuse.email, which also is a great source of information about large-scale spammers.

Information about software piracy is just common sense. Any person who offers to sell software that can’t be registered and can’t receive tech support is selling bootleg software (or, often, NOT selling bootleg software; many sites, such as perfect-shareware.com, don’t even give you any software at all when you pay them, and what are you going to do, sue?).

Information about the country which hosts a Web site is available from many places, including Spamcop (www.spamcop.net), which will tell you the ISP’s abuse contact address for a particular Web site.

Interestingly, Spamcop now lists the responsible party for UDMURTIAWARE.COM as "," which means my
hunch was right; Leo Kuvayev is the person "selling" that bootleg software, which means people suckered into buying it are giving money to Russian organized crime.
