In Paint Shop Pro 8, there’s a straighten tool that allows you to "make horizontal" any particular line.

In PhotoShop CS or Image Ready, there’s a method to rotate, but you have to specify the amount. Is there a way to rotate the right amount by drawing a line or something? In other words, is there some way to determine the amount to rotate other than by trial and error?

Use the measure tool (I) to see how many degrees your vertical or horizontal is out and then rotate arbitrarily by that many degrees to correct your image.

In CS draw a line that needs to be horizontal (measure
tool), choose Rotate/arbitrary, press Enter, enjoy.

I am in here lurking, browsing but thinking a bit too!

Have you tried making guide lines? Draw one out from the side, giving you a vertical guide line and then line up your straight edge in your photo to it.If horizontal is what you want, then same, only draw down the guideline from the top to where you would like your straight edge.

I think you want the transform tool, ctrl-t, rotate at will, if you hold shift you get perspective distorsion.

Yes– but it’s not intuitive and it takes 2 steps.

Use the measure tool (looks like a ruler)
to draw your line. It’s on the tool palette –under the
eye dropper, I think (I don’t have PS open right now)

Then go back to Rotate and there will be an option
"arbitrary" and the angle of your line will already be entered in the dialog box.
Click OK.

Wow, that’s an obscure trick. I don’t think I ever would have figured that one out on my own, and I’ve been using this program ever since PS3. Checking – no, this trick is not shown in the help files either. (At least not for PS7.) They do say you can rotate the canvas using the measure tool, but nothing about rotating a selection the same way. I wonder how many other neat little un-documented features there are hiding around like this…

Yes, using the Measure tool, draw a line from the start point to the end point. Do a rotate arbitrary, and PS automatically enters the amount of rotation to make the line horizontal.

Yeah, Ulead’s PhotoImpact had that too, for many years.

Whatever method you use, straighten once and only once. Do not dilly-dally straightening in numerous increments, because it will continually distort your image. This is why the masters of quality, Adobe, don’t give you a simple, automated way to distort your images.

That might work…but is pointless. PS~CS has the function built in and it works fine. See other replies.

Go back and read it again….nobody said anything about "selection". Though it might work….there are lots of hidden tricks in PS
