Hi Group
I have been considering buying a polarizer for my Canon G6. Should I do so or is it possible to use Photoshop CS2 after the event?
Cheers

You must use the polarizer if you want to adjust polarized light, for example to reduce or eliminate certain reflections (nonmetalic), or darken the sky properly. CS2 can have no knowledge of the polarization of the light in the scene.

I think by "after the event" you mean to edit the image to have the same effect that the polarizer has when used with the camera. The polarizer is used to eliminate strong reflections off certain surfaces. They also enable colors to become more saturated, with better contrast. If you don’t use it and get strong reflections in the image, these are probably saturated (full grey level) and missing any color information. So you can’t easily edit the image to replace these colors.

Photoshop can do a lot, particularly in the hands of an expert. Darkening blue skies is relatively simple. Other corrections, such as removing vivid reflections from a store window, may take less time if you reshoot with an actual polarizer.

Here’s an example of a situation where a polarizer is necessary (unfortunately when a grizzly bear stood in this spot a few minutes later I had the pol off 🙂 …

Hi Group
Thanks for your advice, my next question in respect of my Canon G6 is, linear or circular. Both are available with a lens tube. Cheers
