The cubed "N" on the left side of that logo… I’m wanting to duplicate this kind of 3D image, but, with another letter. How can I accomplish this? I am quite a novice at using Photoshop (just got the "new" CS version today), although I am finding my way around it ok.

Thanks for any info

Tim

That logo could be done fairly easily in Illy CS.
It is not much harder in PS.

I would do it by hand and just trace over it in Photoshop.

How can you trace it over in Photoshop? I hope you will answer my question 😉

Scan the image into Photoshop.
Reduce the opacity of the image layer by 50%
Make a new layer on top, grab that pen tool and start drawing …

The beauty of the pen tool is perfect, editable lines and curves – and being able to tweak them to perfection very easily.

Probably the easiest way would be to create the effect using the Pen Tool ( Paths). Once you have the outline as you want it, you can break the Path apart into the sections that you wish to color, Fill, and Stroke as necessary, then adjust the Levels of the Fill to get the highlight/shadow differences. Paths will allow you to manipulate various aspects of the logo easily by pulling/ pushing the points of the Path(s).

Simple 3-D programs can do this quite easily too. I’d opt for 3-D Studio Max, or similar, and the color/shading can then be added either there, or in 3-D Paint for even greater control.

Hope that this helps,
