A grid that can be coloured in. Anyone have any idea how to achieve this?

Basically, I need to set up a grid that is made of rectangular (non square) cells, each of which I can fill with colours chosen from swatches. I suppose what I’m after is something that looks like a spreadsheet, but obviously done with Photoshop.

I’m sort of stuck as to how to begin. Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Look up the "pattern fill" tool. It’s made for you.

Sorry, I don’t think I explained myself well.

What I need is to be able to set up a reusable grid that I can then fill each cell of with a colour I choose from the palette. As if I am laying tiles in a mosaic. It’s not a one off thing, it’s something I want to use multiple times. I suppose like one of those icon maker programs.

Pattern fill won’t do what I want, I don’t think.

Come to think of it, I’m not even sure I can achieve it in photoshop.

This task is ideal for pattern fill.

Open new file – CTRL + N > Enter size (say 100 x 20) contents White Set colours to black and white – CTRL + D
Select all – CTRL + A
Goto – Select > Modify > Border > set Width to 1 Fill border – Alt + backspace
Deselect – CTRL + D
Goto – Edit > Define Pattern and give it a name.

Open new file – CTRL + N > Enter size (say 1000 x 1000) Sellect paint bucket tool CTRL + G
On the tool options at the top – click the Fill drop-down and choose pattern.
Click the pattern drop-down and choose your rectangle
Fill the new image with your pattern.

What is the size of your matrix, 10 x 10, or 100 x 100? For smaller matrices, doing a set of Layers with masks for each square and leaving them blank would be simple. Once Save(ed), this would be your template. Just click on each Layer, and Fill with your chosen color. Now, if you have a very large matrix, you will probably exceed the limitation of PS’s Layers.

No problem, but I just realised that –

Set colours to black and white – CTRL + D

should of course read –

Set colours to black and white – D

Cheers
