To delete all user slices and layer-based slices:

Do one of the following:

a.. (Photoshop) Choose View > Clear Slices.
b.. (ImageReady) Choose Slices > Delete All.

You instructed Photoshop to show you the slices, probably accidentally by clicking on the Slice or Slice Select tool. Turn off the slices by using the View command, and going to Show, and turning off Slices.

Generally speaking, any time you see something on the screen that you do not want to see, you should go to the View command to turn it off.

If your images are locked and can not be saved, that probably means that they were copied form a CD. Windows (stupidly) marks any image copied from a CD as read-only. You can either use the Save As command to save the image somewhere else, or you can right-click the image in Windows Explorer, go down to Properties, and unlock the image there my making sure it is not set to "read only."

I wonder why I’ve not experienced that.

It also does it if you use the camera/scanner wizzard. I have had to rotate in elements and thensave, because the windows preview won’t let me turn it, claiming it is ‘read only’. Incidentally, explorer doesn’t say they are read only, but the preview says they are!

I use the wizard and have no problems with rotating images as it downloads the thumbnails.
Are you trying to rotate images still on the Flash Card? I also can rotate any image in the picture fax viewer without that error xp pro sp2

No, not on the card. I downloaded a load to a folder on the hard disc, then when going through with preview it let me rotate some, but not others. I know it’s strange, but it is true, and I can’t see any reason for it. I just got used to doing it all in photoshop elements 4 now. Incidentally, if I let PSE4’s camera downloader do the job, there is no problem with rotating while still in the browser. Why windows should decide some are read-only, and others not is a mystery.

Yes, my XP Pro, SP2 is up-to date, as is my Photoshop Elements 4.

Here’s another for you. My Elements 4 steadfastly refuses to work unless I disable my graphics card accelerators, using DXDiag. So now I have a short-cut to dxdiag on my desktop so I can turn pff acceleration to use PSE4, and turn it back on again for everything else. Funny, PSE3 works fine with acceleration on. Adobe seem unable or unwilling to resolve that one, but want me to pay a huge amount to upgrade to CS2. I won’t until they prove they can solve this problem.

To remove the lock on all files in a folder, use Notebook and make file named (for example) FIX.BAT with the line shown below, save it in the folder of files, then double-click on it.

attrib -r *.*

It’s so simple when you get past WindoZe.

Ahh, those were the days! Good old-fashioned DOS batch files. That’s OK, but as I said, there is no read-only attribute set. Right-click on the offending file in explorer, and view the properties, but the ReadOnly and Hidden attribute boxes are clear. It’s a mystery why it happens. If I download say 40 pictures from the camera, and maybe 15 have been taken in portrait format, about half will rotate happilly and the others will complain, then revert to landscape. If it really was read only, I wouldn’t be able to write over it from PSE4 or anything else for that matter. It doesn’t bother me, I just get on with it in PSE, and one day the mystery might just be revealed??

some files when I rotate them Win Pic fax viewer says it has to save them over the orig files, overwriting the original so it won’t let you unless you click yes. The program itself is re-writing your original files when you rotate and instead of just previewing the rotate it is actually having to change the file??
dunno if this making sense

I

I don’t think it does overwrite it. Example: If I have say 5 pictures that need rotating by 90deg, it might do the first one without complaint, at which point it HAS overwritten the original file. Now if it complains at the second one, although it shows me the picture with the correct orientation, when I move on, and then move back again, it has reverted to it’s original and I have to rotate it again. The complaint from the wizzard always says that the file is write protected, and I wonder if there is some subtle difference between ‘write protected’ and ‘read only’. If I look with windows explorer and the right-click properties, it is not read only. I have even gone to a does box and used the attrib command, but that also shows the file as not being read only.

It’s just completely weird, and as I say, I just do it all in elements now and have done with it. Elements never complains about write protection or read only, it just turns the picture. It’s nothing more than curiosity now, because I am so used to it.

Thanks anyway to everyone who has tried to answer this. I don’t suppose even Microsoft would be able to explain it.

Keep snapping folks.

Actually, I believe that I read somewhere that this is an issue with CS2 as well, and that it’s apparently bad enough that it won’t work at all with some graphic cards. I have 6 and CS, but not CS2, so can’t attest from personal experience.

That wouldn’t surprise me. If the newest version of Elements won’t work with acceleration. then it is logical that the newest version of photoshop won’t either. I know PS7 works OK, and elements 2 & 3, so I wonder what they have changed in the newer versions? After all, there is hardly a new machine comes out without acceleration, so the folks at Adobe will be severely restricting their market if their new versions won’t work on new machines. Of course it could be an underhand plot to make everybody buy a MAC so they don’t have to make more than one version!

Windows versions prior to Windows XP would mark any file copied off any CD as "read only;: unless you edited the Properties for the file, you could not modify, delete, or save over it.

XP seems to have fixed this rather boneheaded user interface quirk.
