In an image which is currently loaded in Photoshop I marked a certain part with the Rectangular Marquee Tool and copied it to the clipboard. Fine.

Ok, now I want to paste this clipboard image at another position in the same picture. But: When I click Edit->Paste this clipboard image is always placed in the mid of my picture without any possibility to move it to another position. Why ?

What I need is a paste function which pastes the clipboard contents at the position of the mouse and remains temporarily pending until I (right) click the mouse button at the desired position and thus fix the final position of the paste stuff.

Is this somehow possible?

Hi.

Your "Pasted" section will be on a layer of its own.

Make that layer active by clicking on its thumbnail in the layer palette, and then use the "Move" tool to reposition it where you want.

Then "Flatten" layers to make it permanent.

So you can see where it is. If it pastes directly over the copied section it will be invisible except in Layers.

After Paste, switch to the Move tool and place it where you want. You can also reposition 1 pixel at a time using the arrow keys.

A good general rule of Photoshop:

If you use Copy/Paste, you are probably making a mistake, wasting memory, and wasting time. Do not use Copy/Paste inside Photoshop. Anything you can do with Copy/Paste, there is a faster and easier way to do it.

You want to copy a section of an image and paste it to a new layer? Don’t. Use Layer->New->Laver Via Copy (Control-J) instead. It is more efficient because it does not waste memory creating a space for the clipboard.

Want to copy part of an image and paste into a different picture? Don’t. Just make your selection, click the Move tool, and drag it into the second image.

Want to copy an entire image by using Select All, Copy, then Paste somewhere else? Don’t. Instead, disable all selections (Select->None, control-D), and use the Move tool to drag the entire layer or entire image into another image.

Anyway, what you want to do is make a selection, use Control-J, then use the move tool to position it wherever you like.

If you simply hold down the Ctrl key while clicking and holding the selection after it’s pasted, you can move it at will. Or use the Move command/arrow keys/etc as others have explained.

use Control-J

Cool! While I’ve used it, I just *ass*umed it just copy/pasted in the background and still used the clipboard. Just checked the clipboard, and nada! 🙂 Any little memory-saver is golden to me.

Use the Move tool. It’s right next to the recrangular marquee tool in your toolbox.

Your approach of trying to discover even the utmost elementary PS functions through newsgroups will get you nowhere. You need a minimum of systematic learning. Buy yourself a beginner’s book.

Copy it, then select the area where you want it to arrive, Edit menu>Paste. It pastes into a new layer but approximatly where you selected. Use the Move tool (tool box top right) to put it exactly where you want.

Why not copy it to a new layer ("new layer via copy" command). It will put what you have within the marque on a new layer on top of your photo. Then you can use the "move tool" to reposition it and "transform" to size or reshape it without altering the background photo that it came from. When finished you can "flatten" the layers to lock it into whatever position that you have chosen, but save a copy of your work in the layered version before you flatten it if you think that you might ever want to change it again. Going out of photoshop to the clipboard and then back is just looking for trouble and program incompatibilities, and it’s not at all needed when you already have all the tools within photoshop to do what you want.
