Elements 2: Strange fault when opening camera files

I’ve had a full copy of PE2 for a while, but recently loaded a few freebie plug-ins from a magazine CD (mostly Extensis). Since then, every time I load a (roughly 1Mb) jpg file from my Coolpix 995 there is an overlying ‘mask’ of a beige colour over the whole thing. Yet when the picture is saved as another jpeg that colour is no longer there. Colour picker confirms that white is in fact white, even though it *looks* yellow. Any picture from any other source (like the web) is not affected.

I have uninstalled all the plug-ins, and twice removed and reinstalled Elements, but the colour is still there. It even shows up in the foreground pane and in a new, blank canvas, even though that is definitely set to white.

Got me jiggered, any ideas? Hope I’ve explained the problem properly!
