Healing & Patch Tool

The healing brush tool and the patch tool have no effect when I attempt to use them.I use them as I have used them many times in the past, but nothing happens now(no effect).
Why don’t they work anymore? Any solutions, please.

P.S. I’ve seen a similar post in the past, but I couldn’t find the thread. Yes,I tried flattening the image.

What version of Photoshop? Are you on the right layer? Have you tried trashing your prefs?
