A tutorial that I recently read
(http://raymondshay.com/tutorials/ColorToBW/) used USM to adjust the contrast rather than the contrast adjustment, curves or levels. Is there a reason for choosing USM for adjusting contrast rather than a more conventional technique?

An interesting technique that I hadn’t seen before. In some ways it resembles highlight/shadow in that it uses a mask generated from the shadows and highlights to change contrast. It may have advantages for certain images, but H/S is probably the way to go these days.
