Anyone know how to apply an effect to a layer as something like an adjustment layer? I know I can create a copy of the layer before the effect, hide it and then show/hide the copy if I don’t like the effect, but perhaps there is a more elegant way to do this?

You can show/hide a Layer Style from the Layer>Layer Style menu or by right-clicking on the "f" in the Layers palette if that’s what you’re asking. Also by Control-clicking on it on Mac.

Additionally you can turn them off and on individually by clicking on the eye in the palette.

I have a question loosely affiliated with this problem: When I create layer effects and remove them (by unchecking the box in the Blending Options menu) they won’t disappear at the effects space underneath the layer. Is this a flaw? Or am I missing something?

TIA,
Tiemen

When you turn off the eye next them you are only hiding them. To delete them and remove them from the list you have to delete them like you would a layer. Click on them, hold the mouse button down and drag to the trash can icon.

I think he meant he unselected them in the blending options dialog, not the eye symbol in the layer he applied them to.
Hmm, beats me Tiemen, haven’t seen that before I think. Which version did you say ? CS? Does it happen al the time or is there a particular case we talk about here?

No. what John said was true. After you’ve created the effects bij checking the box in the Blending options menu, and you think you remove the effect by unchecking the box again, it is similar as the eye. Dragging them to the trash can did the job.

Thanks
